Grupo Folklórico Los Mejicas performs on June 3-4

This year’s theme is 'El Orgullo de mi Tierra' (The Pride of My Country)

On June 3 and 4, students in Grupo Folklórico Los Mejicas mark the organization’s 39th anniversary with a spring dance performance on UC Santa Cruz’s Theater Arts Main Stage. This year’s show, “El Orgullo de mi Tierra,” or “the pride of my country,” showcases traditional folkloric dances from six regions of Mexico: Nayarit Costa, Durango, Puebla, Colima, Tabasco and Veracruz.

Sharing the rich and diverse culture of Mexico through traditional dancing and music is a central part of the mission of the student-run Los Mejicas, which was established in 1972.

The organization is open to students of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This year’s show, which includes beautiful costumes and engaging music, is the culmination of the students’ year of training and hard work.

Performances are June 3 and 4, at 7 pm on UC Santa Cruz’s Main Stage in the Performing Arts complex. Purchase tickets at santacruztickets.com, or by phone at (831) 459-2159.

Tickets are $10 for UCSC students and faculty, $12 general admission and non-UCSC students, $10 for seniors and children ages 6-12; children 5 and under are free.
