UCSC hosts Jewish Maccabiah Day games

Jewish students from from a number of college campuses came to UC Santa Cruz last Sunday (April 10) to compete in the first Maccabiah Day in Northern California.

The Maccabiah Games is an international Jewish sporting event similar to the Olympics that is held every four years in Israel. "Sports is something really easy to relate to and provides a special energy and bond," Erez Shacar, the Israel program director for the Santa Cruz Hillel, which coordinated the day of competition, told the Santa Cruz Sentinel. "Having these games is good because it gives added value to the original games back in Israel and provides students a chance to meet new people."

Shacar expected participants from UCSC, University of San Francisco, Cal, Stanford, UC Davis, Sacramento State, Chico State and Sonoma State.

The games included competition in Frisbee, chess, board games, basketball, volleyball and field events, among other activities.
