Dispo Day April 22, 2011: Retention, Disposition and Secure Destruction

Dispo Day documents must be carefully selected and managed:
 
1. All documents to be disposed must have reached or exceeded their retention periods.
2. Documents containing Personal, Confidential or Sensitive Information must be securely shredded. *
3. Documents without personal or confidential information may be disposed of in recycling bins. *
4. If you bring electronic media for destruction be sure to tell us whether or not it has been securely wiped.
 
*Private, Sensitive and Confidential Information
Personally Identifiable Information (PII), as used in information security, refers to information that can be used to uniquely identify, contact, or locate a single person or can be used with other sources to uniquely identify a single individual.
 
Personal Information - information about someone that they might not wish to share; such as their partner’s or children’s names & ages, where they vacation, etc.
 
Sensitive Information - Privileged orproprietary informationwhich, if compromised throughalteration, corruption, loss, misuse, or unauthorized disclosure, could cause serious harm to the organization owning it.
 
Confidential Information -communication shared with only a few people for furthering certain purposes, such as with an attorney for a legal matter, or with a doctor for treatment of a disease. Receiver of confidential information is generally prohibited from using it to take advantage of the giver.  Also called privileged information.
