UC Santa Cruz alumni have the rare opportunity to help shape the future of the University of California by becoming a voting member of the UC Board of Regents.

The position is especially influential now given the fiscal crises facing the state and the University of California.

UC's alumni regents are selected for two-year terms on a rotating basis from the system's 10 campuses. The successful applicant will be the fourth UC Santa Cruz alum to represent the campus on the Board of Regents. The most recent was Gary Novack, Kresge ’73, who served from 2003-2005. He is the Founder and President of Pharmalogic and current president of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation. Paul Hall, Merrill ’72, who served from 1991-1993 is a partner with the law firm DLA Piper, LLP. The first to serve from 1979-1981 was Allan Goodman, Stevenson ’67, who is a Superior Court Judge for Los Angeles County.

The successful applicant will serve the first year as an alumni regent designate and secretary of the Alumni Association of the University of California (AAUC). He or she will attend all meetings and participate in policy discussions but without voting rights.

Then, beginning July 1, 2013, the regent designate will serve as president of the AAUC and become a full-voting member of the Board of Regents.

The AAUC officers' primary role is to serve as alumni representatives on the Board of Regents, representing all UC alumni. They also serve as liaisons between the AAUC member organizations, such as the UCSC Alumni Association, and the Board of Regents. The officers also provide programming leadership to the AAUC.

A Regent Selection Committee consisting of members of the UCSC Alumni Association executive committee will select the next UCSC alumni regent.

To qualify, one must be an active member of the UCSC Alumni Association who holds a degree from UC Santa Cruz and who has demonstrated interest in UCSC and the University of California in general.

The selection is expected to be made by the end of the year.
