Demonstration Advisory Group

To: UCSC Students

From: Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Alison Galloway

Dear Students,

The campus is forming a Demonstration Advisory Group (DAG) that will make recommendations to the administration about the campus response to demonstrations. If you are interested in serving on this vital committee, please read on.

The DAG will address critical issues, such as:

• How to establish and maintain communication between the different groups involved in a demonstration;

• Clarifying the responsibilities of observers from Labor Relations, Student Affairs, and faculty during a demonstration, as well as the responsibilities of people participating in the demonstration;

• The role and involvement of public safety officers;

• The use of photography and video; and

• The consequences when campus policy or other regulations are violated during a demonstration.

Committee members will be expected to seek information and advice from individuals who are affected by, or involved in, campus demonstrations. I will co-chair the group, along with another faculty member. Chancellor Blumenthal and I anticipate that DAG will meet as often as needed during this academic year in order to prepare a set of recommendations for us by the end of June 2011.

I would like to see faculty, students, and staff represented on this committee. Students in good standing will be selected through two processes: The Graduate Student Association and the Student Union Assembly will each recommend one student representative, and one graduate student and one undergraduate will be selected from the general student population.

Students who wish to be considered must submit a statement of interest by midnight, 12 a.m. midnight, Tuesday, November 23, 2010, using the online application form. You will need to provide the name of a faculty reference and answer the following two questions:

• Why do you want to serve on this committee?

• What experience or perspective would you bring to this committee?

I look forward to reviewing the applications and beginning the important work of this campus committee.

Sincerely,

Alison Galloway

Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor
