Two Theater Arts faculty members at UC Santa Cruz have been honored with 2009 Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards.

David Lee Cuthbert, chair of UCSC's Theater Arts Department, took home the award in "Lighting Design" for The Kite Runner at the San Jose Repertory Theatre.

Theater arts professor Danny Scheie prevailed in the category of "Principal Performance, Male" for his role in You, Nero at the Berkeley Repertory Theater.

Celebrating Bay Area theater excellence during 2009, the 34th annual awards ceremony took place at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.

UCSC theater arts faculty received eight nominations for this year's awards, and of the six dramas nominated for best "Entire Production," UCSC faculty were involved in five of them.

"It's exciting to see the research of arts faculty receive such positive recognition by the media," Cuthbert noted.

"The creative work of UCSC theater arts faculty continues to be sought after by theaters across the Bay Area, as well as the rest of the country, and is known for taking the art form in new and exciting directions," he added.
