Each year during Summer Orientation the campus officially welcomes new students and their families. Summer Orientation represents the first step toward a student's academic and social transition into university life, eventually leading to graduation and becoming a UC Santa Cruz alumnus!

Students and family members understand that Orientation is a time for them to learn about academic and social pathways, including advising, enrollment and campus resources. They also have the opportunity to engage with faculty, staff and current students who can assist them in navigating the university.

Attendance at Summer Orientation has exceeded 87% for the past several years. From the survey results we know that students especially appreciate meeting with department and college advisers, and overall feel better prepared after attending Orientation. Both students and family members enjoy and benefit from the resource fair because it allows them to learn about UC Santa Cruz and our various services and opportunities.

Family members play a vital role in students' successful transition to college life. To fully inform them about UCSC, we offer a Family Orientation Program that runs concurrently with, but separately from, the student program. The Family Orientation session is designed to help family members gain a better understanding of the university, and to develop skills that reinforce a sense of family support for their student's education.

If you have feedback regarding past Orientations or new ideas for future programming, please e-mail me directly at rplaza@ucsc.edu or call me at ext. 9-5499.

Thank you for your continued support.
