Administrative changes in the Division of Graduate Studies

To: UCSC Community

From: David Kliger Campus Provost/ Executive Vice Chancellor

It is with great regret that I announce that for personal reasons Lisa Sloan has resigned her position of Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies, effective immediately. However, I am pleased to announce that Tyrus Miller has agreed to serve in that position on an interim basis, subject to Regental approval for the appointment.

I want to thank Professor Sloan for her service to the Graduate Studies Division, as well as for her earlier service as Associate Dean. In her term as Graduate Dean, she has expanded and organized the Graduate Division into a highly effective office which is serving the campus very well. Lisa will be resuming her role as Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, and her research in paleoclimatology and climate change.

Professor Miller brings a wealth of experience in academic administration and graduate studies, as well as continuity to Graduate Division leadership. He has been serving as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and as the co-provost for Cowell College. From 2006 to 2008, Professor Miller was a member of the Graduate Council and served as chair in 2007-08. Earlier, he served as Director of the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) in Budapest.

Professor Miller joined the UC Santa Cruz faculty in 1999 and currently is a Professor of Literature. He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in English, and received a concurrent B.A./M.A. in Humanities from Johns Hopkins University, where he later received a second M.A. in Creative Writing. Tyrus is a scholar of European modernism and avant-garde movements. He taught for four years at Yale University in the departments of English, Comparative Literature, and Film Studies before accepting his position at UCSC. He also was a Fulbright research scholar in Vienna and Budapest.

A search for a permanent Vice Provost and Dean for the Graduate Studies Division will be conducted this year.
