In Memoriam: Ellen Morrison

To: UCSC Community

From: Steve Thorsett, Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences

It is with great sadness that I write to tell you of the death of Ellen Morrison, Graduate Advisor in the Mathematics Department. Ellen died on Friday, July 10, following a short illness.

Ellen's first involvement with UCSC was as a student, having the distinction of being a member of Cowell College's founding class of 1965. She later became a staff member at Oakes College, where she worked as a housing coordinator during the early 1990s. She left UCSC for a short time and returned to campus to work in the Mathematics Department in 1995, where she worked for the past 14 years.

Ellen provided extraordinary service to her Department, the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences, and the many graduate students whose lives she profoundly impacted by her mentoring, wise counsel and good humor over the years. Those who had the privilege of working closely with Ellen were indeed fortunate to have had her as a colleague and a friend.

A memorial service is currently being planned for a later time.

Please join me in expressing our sincere condolences to Ellen's husband Jim, their children and grandchildren, and her many family members, colleagues and friends.
