Campus veterans' group to present Memorial Day event

Retired U.S. Navy Captain Gordon R. Nakagawa will deliver the keynote at a Memorial Day event May 20.

Student Veterans of America and Services for Transfer and Re-Entry Students will present a Memorial Day event from 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at the Stevenson Event Center.

A memorial address will be given by retired U.S. Navy Captain Gordon R. Nakagawa, a Vietnam veteran and POW.

UCSC veteran students, staff, faculty, and affiliates are invited, as are non-veterans.

Also expected to attend are:

  • Community veteran groups and resources

  • Junior college veteran students from Cabrillo College, San Jose City College, and Monterey Peninsula College

  • Invited guests

  • Ceremonial detail

    The event will include:

  • Color Guard

  • Singing of the national anthem

  • Invocation by Lieutenant Commander Statler, chaplain, Naval Postgraduate School

  • Introductory speaker Colonel Bucky Peterson (chairman of Troops to College)

  • Food service

  • Memorial address

  • Dedication of an American flag to the campus

  • Choir performance

  • Benediction by Lieutenant Commander Statler
