To: UCSC Campus Community

From: Chancellor Blumenthal and Campus Provost/EVC Kliger

We are very pleased to announce that the UC Regents have approved the appointment of Arthur P. Ramirez as Dean of the Jack Baskin School of Engineering. The appointment takes effect May 1.

Dr. Ramirez is a leader in the field of materials science and has held management positions at Bell Labs and Los Alamos National Laboratory. He is currently leader of composite materials and device development for LGS, a subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent, and an adjunct professor of applied physics and applied mathematics at Columbia University. Dr. Ramirez has the experience and vision needed to ensure the continued success of our innovative engineering school.

We are sincerely grateful to Acting Dean Michael Isaacson for his outstanding leadership of our engineering school during the past two years. Under his leadership, Baskin Engineering has strengthened its partnerships with industry, attracted major funding in areas such as nanotechnology and stem cell research, and developed exciting new programs, such as undergraduate degrees in computer game design and bioengineering and the multidisciplinary graduate program in technology and information management.

We also want to thank the search committee members for diligently and patiently identifying and evaluating an impressive list of potential candidates, and providing an excellent slate of finalists for our collective consideration.
