UCSC Welcomes Director of Internal Audit and Advisory Services

To: UCSC Community

From: Patrick Reed, University Auditor, University of California, Office of the President and Tom Vani, Vice Chancellor, Business and Administrative Services

It is our pleasure to announce that Mr. Barry Long will be joining the campus as Director of Internal Audit and Advisory Services. Barry replaces Geri Gail, who is retiring from UCSC after 30 years of dedicated university service.

Barry comes to UCSC as a Certified Public Accountant, and with a long and successful career in the field of Auditing. For the past 20 years, he worked in the Audit department at the University of California (UC) Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, most recently serving as the Internal Audit Manager. His knowledge and familiarity with the policies and processes at UC and higher education in general add to the depth and breadth of his skills and qualifications. Barry's past audit experience includes work in the medical and health arena, including work for the County of Santa Clara, and the State of California, Department of Health Services. In addition to his professional achievements, he is actively involved with the Institute of Internal Auditors, an international professional association of more than 120,000 members providing dynamic leadership for the global profession of internal auditing.

We thank Assistant Campus Provost Charlotte Moreno and the Internal Audit Director search committee for their dedication and efforts in this search. In addition, we extend thanks to David V. Lane for filling in as Interim Audit Director during the search, and for his leadership in enabling a smooth transition.

The Internal Audit Director in education plays a key role in assisting senior management in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities, enhancing its reputation, and maintaining public trust. Barry comes highly recommended and respected amongst his peers and supervisors, and we are all delighted to welcome him on board as he prepares to join UCSC on June 1st, 2009.
