Professor's misty, dreamy photo is contest winner

The winner of the chancellor's on-campus photography contest is a dreamy scene of a misty path curving away out of sight into fog-enshrouded redwoods caught by Professor James Clifford of the History of Consciousness Department.

Hopeful photographers sent in more than 250 photos for the annual contest, announced this year in September. But the foggy path photo caught the eye of the judges.

"I loved the serenity of the scene," said judge Kelly Weisberg, Hastings College of the Law professor and Chancellor Blumenthal's wife. "I was also struck by the contrast of the fog and the vibrant fall colors. It made me want to step right into the picture and walk down the path."

Each year, the Chancellor's Office holds a contest for a photograph of the UC Santa Cruz campus, taken by a member of the UCSC community, to use as the front cover of its season's greeting card.

The Chancellor's Office and the Arts Division sponsor the contest, which is open to all UCSC faculty, staff, and students.

First prize is a $200 Bay Tree Book Store gift certificate.
