In Memoriam: Bruce Lane

To: UCSC Community

From: David Lane, UCSC's Educational Facilities Planner

With grieving and sorrow, I write to inform the UC Santa Cruz campus community of the passing of my father, Bruce Lane. Dad worked for UC Santa Cruz for 27 years as a Project Architect, Educational Facilities Planner, and Director of Capital Planning. He was 82 and passed away on October 4, 2008.

Dad would tell of being interviewed by Chancellor McHenry in the fields of the old Cowell Ranch in 1964. He was hired as a Project Architect and immediately began managing four capital projects that were already in design; McHenry Library, Cowell College, Stevenson College, and the East Field House (gymnasium). Dad was involved with the planning and construction of almost every facility that has been erected on the campus. He retired from UCSC in 1991 and a great deal of his planning continued to be implemented up to the new millennium.

Dad graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, and from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture. He designed a home which was built for our family in 1965 and where he lived his final days. He was proud of his service to his country and retired as a Major in the Army. Dad loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit 70 different countries and all seven continents. Â He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, Theta Chi Fraternity, UCSC Retirees Association, Friends of the UCSC Library, Friends of the UCSC Arboretum, Sons in Retirement, Founding Sponsor of the National Museum of the U.S. Army, and Pre-marriage Sponsor at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church.

Dad is survived by my mother, Maxine Lane, who retired in 1991 as Contracts and Grants Officer after 22 years of employment at UCSC. He is also survived by his four children, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. I will always be reminded of my father's accomplishments as I walk our beautiful campus and run into the many people who knew him, loved him, and worked with him.

The family prefers remembrances to the UCSC Foundation, 1156 High Street, Santa Cruz, California 95064 for the UCSC Retirees Association Scholarship Fund. Please see the obituary for memorial services on Sunday, October 12, and the following Monday.
