Week of events spotlights student achievement

Hundreds of UCSC students will be honored for their outstanding work in research and academic achievement during Student Achievement Week, taking place May 31-June 6.

The honorees are students who have received awards recognizing their achievements in research and other scholarly activities. Many will present their work publicly through a myriad of events-everything from the Annual Print Sale, art exhibitions, and theater productions to a natural sciences and engineering poster symposium.

The weeklong celebration culminates in an awards ceremony on Friday, June 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the East Field.

(The inauguration of George Blumenthal as UCSC's 10th chancellor will take place earlier in the day in the same venue. At Chancellor Blumenthal's request, his inauguration was scheduled to complement the awards ceremony, calling more attention to an event that each year showcases the work of UCSC students.)

A highlight of Student Achievement Week is the ninth annual Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium, which showcases a wide variety of research projects by students in the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences and the Jack Baskin School of Engineering.

The symposium will be held on Thursday, June 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Jack Baskin Engineering Courtyard.

Other events include the 34th Annual Print Sale and the 2008 Irwin Scholars Exhibition.
