César Chávez Convocation to honor late labor leader, civil rights activist

The Fifth Annual César Chávez Convocation will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at UCSC's College Nine and Ten Multipurpose Room.

The convocation will honor the memory of labor leader and civil rights activist César Chávez, who cofounded the United Farmworkers Union (UFW). This year's honorary guest is performance artist/writer Guillermo Gómez-Peña, artistic director of multidisciplinary arts organization La Pocha Nostra. He will perform "El Mexorcist 3," a new solo performance and the final installment in the Mexorcist Trilogy.

Gómez-Peña, a performing artist/activist, was the first Latino to win the MacArthur "genius grant." He is a regular contributor to National Public Radio, a writer for newspapers and magazines in the United States, Mexico, and Europe, and a contributing editor to The Drama Review (NYU-MIT).

Following the performance, attendees are invited to a Town Hall Meeting on Social Justice facilitated by Gómez-Peña.
