Business-related use of Zipcar Car Sharing program

To: UCSC Staff and Faculty

From: Larry Pageler, Director of Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS)

As many of you are aware, TAPS recently contracted with a company called Zipcar to introduce a new sustainable transportation program on campus called "car sharing". Car sharing is essentially a membership-based car rental program that allows members access to vehicles without the need for car ownership. UCSC has seven Zipcar vehicles conveniently located both on and off campus, including 2300 Delaware and the University Town Center in downtown Santa Cruz.

While this program is primarily intended for personal travel needs, we are pleased to announce that Zipcar can now also be used for short-term UC business-related trips. Departments interested in participating must first establish a Zipcar Department Account, at a cost of $100 per year. Staff and faculty authorized by that department then register individually at no additional charge. (Student workers 18 years of age and older are also eligible to apply under a departmental account.)

Use fees for Zipcar (which include fuel, insurance and parking costs) start at $8 per hour or $65 per day, and may be used up to 24 hours or 180 miles round-trip on a business-related trip. (UC Fleet Services and/or rental car services should be used for trips that exceed these limitations.) Zipcar fees can be charged to a UC ProCard, UC Corporate travel card, or personal credit card. Details on how to apply for departmental Zipcar accounts can be found at http://www2.ucsc.edu/taps.

I encourage all staff and faculty to learn more about this exciting new program at www.zipcar.com/ucsc. For additional information about car sharing at UCSC, please contact Teresa Buika of my staff at 469-1941 or tabuika@ucsc.edu.
