UCSC in the News is a weekly column summarizing prominent media placements UCSC faculty, staff, and students have received.

News coverage of the Grateful Dead's donation of their archives to UC Santa Cruz was extensive, with the story reported in hundreds of newspapers and broadcast outlets across the country, plus the UK, France, and Canada. Coverage included a front-page feature story in the San Francisco Chronicle, two front-page articles in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, a feature in the San Jose Mercury News, as well as stories by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, BBC News, AP, Reuters, and major San Francisco television stations (see Currents story).

Science News magazine ran a story about research on the Tibetan Plateau led by geologist Xixi Zhao (see Currents story).

In an op-ed published in the San Francisco Chronicle, Brad Olsen of education called for changes that would give classroom teachers more say regarding the direction of education reform.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel tapped political scientist Sheldon Kamieniecki for analysis before the Pennsylvania primary.

Solar Today magazine ran a story about research by chemist Jin Zhang on nanotech materials for solar cells.

Research on long-term data storage led by computer scientists Ethan Miller, Mark Storer, and Kevin Greenan was covered on technology news sites TG Daily, Slashdot, and Blocks and Files (see Currents story).

USNews.com is the latest publication to pick up on the work by economist Ricard Gil about the reason movie theaters charge so much for popcorn (see Currents story).

Glenn Stewart, a biologist with the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, was quoted in a San Jose Mercury News story about the peregrine falcons nesting on the San Jose City Hall building.

Bill Domhoff of psychology fielded numerous media calls about his research on dreams, including inquires from the Santa Cruz Sentinel, KUSP Radio, and Bruce Bratton of KZSC Radio.

Hydrogeologist Andrew Fisher was quoted in a story in the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian about an upcoming water forum at which he will speak.

Marc Mangel, professor of applied math and statistics, was quoted in a story on ClimateWire about Antarctic krill.

An article in the Mountain View Voice about plans for the NASA Research Park included quotes from William Berry, managing director of the Affiliated Research Center.
