UCSC literature professor Nathaniel Mackey has been named a winner in the 26th Annual Northern California Book Awards in the poetry category for his latest book Splay Anthem. The awards were given for books published in 2006 by northern California authors.

These honors are presented each year by the Northern California Book Reviewers (NCBR), a group of book reviewers, book review editors, and others who write about reading. This year's awards were copresented with the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association, Poetry Flash, The Center for the Art of Translation, and the San Francisco Public Library "to honor the work of northern California authors and translators, and recognize exceptional service to the community by literary leaders."

Mackey was previously honored with the 2006 National Book Award in poetry for Splay Anthem. He is also one of only 10 individuals in the United States and abroad who received a nonrestrictive $25,000 poetry grant in February from The Foundation for Contemporary Arts.
