Sixth Annual Campus Earth Summit

To: Campus Community

From: Acting Chancellor George Blumenthal

On behalf of the Campus Sustainability Council and the Student Environmental Center, I invite you to attend the Sixth Annual Campus Earth Summit Friday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Stevenson Event Center.

As we move into the 21st Century, we have incredible opportunities to incorporate sustainability into every aspect of campus (and personal) life. Over the past five years, the Earth Summit has created and advanced productive conversations among UC Santa Cruz students, faculty, staff, administration, and the larger Santa Cruz community.

Each year, we update our "Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus," which outlines goals for advancing campus sustainability. This year, you will have the opportunity to join one of the possible following topic groups: Curriculum, Waste Prevention, Renewable Energy, Green Building, Indigenous Rights, Transportation, Campus Gardens, Campus Climate Challenge, and Food Systems.

Each topic group will review current knowledge about what UCSC is doing now that moves the campus toward sustainability, including results from 2006 Earth Summit action items. Groups will then create an action plan for 2007 and form working groups to stay connected throughout the year.

This year's keynote speaker is Melissa K. Nelson, Ph.D., a UCSC graduate, writer, educator, researcher and activist. Her work is dedicated to indigenous revitalization, environmental protection and restoration, and the renewal and celebration of community health and cultural arts. Her detailed biography is available at: www.enviroslug.org.

Joining me in making presentations will be Assemblymember John Laird, Santa Cruz City Councilmember Cynthia Mathews, and University of California Sustainability Specialist Matthew St. Clair.

All 2007 Summit participants will receive continental breakfast and an organic lunch. Space is limited to 350 participants. Detailed agenda is available at: www.enviroslug.org.

Please RSVP at: bas.ucsc.edu/events.
