EEO/Affirmative Action, Title IX/Sexual Harassment Office, and Office of the Ombudsman

To: Campus Community

From: Acting Chancellor Blumenthal and Campus Provost Kliger

We are delighted to announce that the offices of Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action, Title IX/Sexual Harassment, and the Ombudsman will again report directly to the Chancellor's Office. Day-to-day oversight will be with Assistant Chancellor/Chief of Staff Ashish Sahni.

It is important to note that these three offices are responsible for areas the entire campus cares about deeply. Diversity and equal opportunity, prevention of sexual harassment and sexual assault, and effective conflict resolution are vital to ensure a safe and productive working and learning environment for everyone on campus.

We want to make clear that our commitment to these offices, their staffs, and their work begins at the highest levels of the campus administration.

EEO/AA, Title IX, and the Ombudsman reported to the Chancellor's Office until about two years ago when oversight authority was transferred to the Executive Vice Chancellor/Campus Provost. Directors Patti Hiramoto, Rita Walker, and Laurie McCann have expressed their support for the moves.

EEO/AA's mission is to assist, advise, and educate the campus on ways to institutionalize diversity and provide a positive climate for all to succeed. It also ensures that UCSC's employment policies and practices comply with all Federal, State, and University requirements for equal employment opportunity, non-discrimination, and affirmative action.

Title IX/Sexual Harassment Office provides advice, consultations and early resolution for reports of sexual harassment and sexual assault for all students, staff, faculty and any person participating in a University sponsored program or event. The Title IX/Sexual Harassment Officer is the campus investigator for formal complaints of sexual assault and sexual harassment. Emphasizing prevention and early resolution, the office's web site very informative.

The Office of the Ombudsman is an independent and confidential resource offering conflict management, communication coaching and facilitation of proactive change on campus. It serves students, staff, faculty, non-Senate academics, administrators, alumni, parents, and community members.
