UCSC alumnus Steven Hawley (Ph.D., astronomy and astrophysics, '77), who flew on five space shuttle missions, will return to campus to deliver the keynote address at the commencement for graduate students; he currently serves as director of NASA's Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Directorate. Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak, CEO of location technology company Wheels of Zeus, will deliver the keynote at the graduation celebration for the Jack Baskin School of Engineering; and UCSC alumnus John Laird (B.A., politics, '72), a California assemblymember whose district includes Santa Cruz County, will be the featured speaker at Crown College's commencement. For details, see complete listing, below.

A total of 2,286 UCSC students are candidates for bachelor of arts, music, or science degrees.

Also this spring, 175 students are eligible to receive master of arts or science degrees; of these students, 12 will receive the first master of fine arts degrees from the Digital Arts & New Media program, and 90 will complete UCSC's Department of Education master's program in late summer.

In addition, 78 UCSC students are candidates for doctorates. A small number of students will receive graduate certificates.

In addition to commencement exercises hosted by UCSC's ten colleges, the Graduate Division, and the School of Engineering, a number of less formal celebrations, also beginning June 16, are planned to honor graduates.

(In the two prior quarters of the current academic year, many other UCSC students earned undergraduate or graduate degrees: 1,009 undergraduates earned bachelor's degrees at the end of the fall or winter quarters, 72 students earned master's degrees, and 51 students earned doctorates. An undetermined number of other UCSC students will also complete their work toward degrees this summer, in the academic year's fourth quarter.)
